CISESS Executive Director Ellen Williams and Deputy Director Hugo Berbery distributed a letter of recognition to eight CISESS and CISESS Consortium Scientists for their excellent work on the National Weather Service’s National Air Quality Forecasting Capability (NAQFC). They all work at the NOAA Air Resources Laboratory (ARL). Here it the text of the letter:

The Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS) would like to recognize the fundamental role of our scientists that have contributed through the years to the establishment and success of the National Weather Service’s National Air Quality Forecasting Capability (NAQFC).

The NOAA NAQFC forecasting service covering the entire nation began in 2006, providing forecast and warning of poor air quality adversely affecting our citizens. Currently, NAQFC provides daily 48-hour forecasts of ground-level ozone and PM2.5 (atmospheric particles with diameter less than 2.5 micrometers). These pollutants are silent yet significant sources of mortality, productivity, and property loss in the U.S. Thus, the NAQFC provides a vital service to public health agencies across the country by saving at least 10,000 lives and billions of dollars of potential property-related losses on an annual basis since 2017. The highly accurate 48-hour forecasts of adverse pollution and air quality conditions allow state and local public safety and health agencies, at-risk citizens, and businesses to take advance preventive actions to aid in saving lives and mitigating property loss.

NOAA has given the Administrator’s Award to the team’s federal employees for this achievement. The entire team, including CISESS scientists, have been extremely dedicated and have worked tirelessly to ensure the accuracy and timeliness of NAQFC forecasts for the benefit of the entire U. S. population.

The following CI past and present personnel has contributed substantially to NAQFC over the years and should be appropriately recognized for their work and dedication:

  • Dr. Daniel Tong
  • Dr. Youhua Tang
  • Dr. Li Pan
  • Dr. Tianfeng Chai
  • Dr. HyunCheol Kim
  • Dr. Fantine Ngan
  • Dr. Barry Baker
  • Dr. Patrick Campbell

It is a privilege for CISESS to have such outstanding scientists. Congratulations to all, and thank you for bringing the institute to a higher level.

This letter was issued in conjunction with a NOAA Administrator's Award given to the federal employees on the team.
