NCAS Weather Camp

The NOAA Center for Atmospheric Sciences (NCAS) weather camp made their 5th annual trip to CICS-MD on July 18.  The visit provides the 14 weather campers to interact with undergraduate students conducting research at CICS during the summer.  Scott Rudlosky led off with an introduction and overview, Kayla Brown presented on her work to visualize data from the Geostationary Lightning Mapper, and Matthew Bielec presented on his work to query new feeds nationwide to document the occurrence of lightning-ignited house fires.  Larissa Antunes showed some recent high-speed video that she captured of nearby lightning strikes.  Two demonstrations developed by Michael Peterson followed, one which showed the students 3-D lightning data in a virtual reality environment, and another that displayed GOES-16 data on the magic planet (small science on a sphere). The final hour was dedicated to group discussions where the high school students were able to ask questions of the undergraduate students (see photo above).  As always, we look forward to the next weather camp visit.
