CISESS Observes Forecasters Testing Lightning Products

CISESS Scientist Joseph Patton participated in the Spring 2026 Experiment at the Hazardous Weather Testbed Satellite Proving Ground. He assisted and observed NWS forecasters explore new satellite-derived products concerning lightning and enhanced decision-making support services.

NOAA Soil Moisture Operational Product System (SMOPS): New Products & Applications

In the last year, CISESS Scientist Jifu Yin has continued making significant improvements to the NOAA Soil Moisture Operational Product System (SMOPS). A new version of near-real-time soil moistures products is about to be released and progress has been made toward a new high-resolution (1 km) product. New satellites are being added to SMOPS: GOSAT-GW, WSF-M and NISAR. SMOPS also has been integrated with the Land Data Assimilation System for the Unified Forecast System.

NOAA Ship Data Assembly Center: Ready for Deployment

CISESS Scientist Hyelim Yoo at NCEI has been working with the NOAA Office of Marine and Aviation Operations (OMAO) to set up a Data Assembly Center that will automate the archiving of ship data. She and her NOAA Partner Chris Paver have been able to develop working software pipelines for the major types of ocean data collected by ships. In 2025, they processed data for 98% of NOAA’s days into the NCEI system.

Fire Emissions for GBBEPx Increased by Adding Sentinel-3 Data

CISESS Consortium Scientist Xiaoyang Zhang and his team at the South Dakota State University Geospatial Science Center of Excellence have made significant improvements to the NOAA Global Biomass Burning Emissions Product eXtended (GBBEPx) during this year’s CISESS Project. They were able to increase the number of fires detected and emissions included in GBBEPx by adding Sentinel-3’s mid-morning data to the afternoon overpass data of the JPSS satellites.
