Student Opportunities
The CISESS Summer Initiative (CSI) series provides training and outreach opportunities for both graduate and undergraduate students. It pairs students with mentors to conduct original scientific research and help train future NOAA scientists.Students not only learn new tools but are already contributing to generate products with value for NOAA. The summer initiative is a framework that includes software tutorials, informal student presentations, weather/climate discussions, and interactions with other institutions/organizations to maximize the student experience. If you are interested in being a summer intern at CISESS, please send your resume with a cover letter to Debra Baker at drb@umd.edu.
Do you want to be a student mentor?
CISESS can offer you support if you want to mentor a student. Many NOAA sponsors are willing to include funding for student internships in CICS task budgets. Our main office has student interns all year round but in the summer we gear up for the CISESS Summer Initiative, which brings in around 20 students, undergraduates and graduates, to learn new skills together. Your summer intern can have a desk and computer at our office and regularly visit you at your office for assignments. We tend to attract excellents students, including several Hollings scholars. If you are interested in participating as a mentor, please contact Debra Baker at dbaker@essic.umd.edu.
