SDSU Global Biomass Burning Emissions Product - Maintenance and Refinement

(NOAA Collaborators:Shobha Kondragunta )

Research Topic: Data Fusion and Algorithm Development
Task Leader: Xiaoyang Zhang

Global Biomass Burning Emissions Product eXtended (GBBEPx V3) is operationally
produced in NOAA OSPO (Office of Satellite and Product Operations) by blending active fire
detections from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard Terra and
Aqua and Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) onboard Suomi National Polarorbiting
Partnership (SNPP) and Joint Polar Satellite System (NOAA-20). This product has been
used as an important input to both operational and experimental versions of aerosol models at the
Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL)
as well as regional air quality model of CAM (Convection Allowing Model) CMAQ (Community
Multiscale Air Quality Modeling System) at the Air Resources Laboratory (ARL). The product is
also used for other users, such as the evaluations of observations from the ground and aircraft
during the Fire Influence on Regional to Global Environments and Air Quality (FIREX-AQ). The
specific tasks of this project are to maintain the GBBEPx V3 process in our local machine and
reprocess the historical biomass burning emissions during the MODIS and VIIRS era based on the
request of NOAA modelers, to refine the algorithm of biomass burning emissions and Fire
Radiative Power (FRP) estimates, and to compare GBBEPx emissions and FRP with FIREX-AQ
data.
