CICS-MD Scientists win NESDIS Award

CICS-MD Scientists Xi Shao, Bin Zhang, and Yan Bai were named NESDIS Outstanding Science and Research Employees of the Year for STAR’s Satellite Meteorology and Climatology Division (SMCD). They shared the award with CICS-MD NOAA Sponsors Changyong Cao, Wenhui Wang and Shihyan Lee for their work on the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day/Night Band.
This annual award goes to a group or individual for demonstrated excellence in the areas of:
o providing sensor-derived products and interpretive analyses;
o acquiring, processing, and storing environmental data and ground processing systems; and
o improving on existing environmental information product to enhance utility, clarity or efficiency.
The STAR team made achieved significant advances in critical areas of the VIIRS Day/Night Band (DNB) development, including JPSS 1 waiver mitigation, operational straylight correction, and geolocation capability development and validation.
They received the award at a ceremony held on December 8th.
