Assessing Design and Deployment Strategies for Future Microwave-Sounding Missions

CISESS Scientist Dr. Zaizhong Ma and co-authors, including CISESS Deputy Director Dr. Hugo Berbery, recently published a study on the expected forecast impact of future microwave sounding instruments planned under NOAA’s Near Earth Orbit Network (NEON) program. This work was done using the Ensemble of Data Assimilations (EDA) for the Integrated Forecasting System in collaboration with the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF).

SOUP: A Recipe for Managing Ocean Data from the Abyss to Archive

CISESS Scientist Anna Lienesch has recently implemented a new NOAA ocean exploration data user portal called SOUP. As a Sample Data Manager on the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer, she is a primary user of this tool, which she helped design, enhance, and test. SOUP may undergo further development to be used for other projects, replacing outdated workflows and streamlining processes.

CICS Contract Renewed

On June 20, NOAA signed the renewal of a Cooperative Agreement with the University of Maryland/Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center (ESSIC) extending the Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites (CICS) for another five years: July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2019.

TV Appearances by CICS-MD Scientists

Two CICS-MD scientists have recently been interviewed on TV to comment about current issues. Scott Rudlosky appeared on NBC 4 in Washington, DC, for Lightning Safety Week and Russ Dickerson spoke on the Time Warner Cable News in Austin,TX, about recent satellite data showing big improvements in air quality.​
