R&D Support for Science Mission Areas at the Office of Water Prediction and the National Water Center in Silver Spring, Maryland

(NOAA Collaborators:Sam Contorno)

Research Topic: Climate Research, Data Assimilation, and Modeling
Task Leader: E. Hugo Berbery
Sponsor: NWC
Published Date: 11/10/2020

In this project, CISESS scientists will participate in several mission-related research and development activities with NOAA/National Weather Service (NWS)/Office of Water Prediction (OWP) in Silver Spring as well as OWP/National Water Center (NWC) in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. To this end, they will be co-located with OWP staff in Silver Spring, Maryland.  Specifically, the mission of the NWC is to promote collaboration across the scientific community, serving as both a catalyst to accelerate the transition of research into operations and a center of excellence for water resources science, information and prediction services. These services inform essential emergency management and water resources decisions across all time scales, including drought, low-flow risks, and information needs for routine and long-range water management and planning. Research conducted in support of the NWC mission includes the development of the National Water Model (NWM), data assimilation, coastal coupling, and flood inundation mapping, among other activities.
