The purpose of this task is to assist in the further development of an experimental method of upper ocean heat content estimation, known as Empirical Dynamic Topography (Byrne et al., 2020). It takes from a human-intensive, preliminary product that is well-studied in a geographically modest testbed region to a more automated approach suitable for broad application across the major subtropical ocean basins. It will also involve describing the benefits (and limitations) of the new algorithm to the scientific community in the peer-reviewed literature, and the National Weather Service in a variety of venues.
