Tom Smith Honored with a DOC Gold Medal

Thomas M. Smith was awarded the Department of Commerce Gold Medal in a ceremony held this week. He was part of a team recognized "for ground-breaking research using NOAA's global surface temperature dataset to show there was no 'hiatus' in global warming over the past 15 years." Tom is a NOAA Research Scientist with STAR's Satellite Climate Studies Branch (CRPD) and is co-located with the Cooperative Institute for Climate and Satellites at the University of Maryland (CICS-MD). The Department's Gold Medal recognizes distinguished performance characterized by extraordinary, notable or prestigious contributions that impact the mission of the Department of Commerce and/or one operating unit, and that reflect favorably on the Department. These medals are the highest awards bestowed by the Department to recognize distinguished performance by NOAA employees.
