CICS-MD Scientist Patrick Meyers prepared this video of Hurricane Florence lightning as recorded by the Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) on GOES-16 on September 13. CICS-MD is supporting NOAA forecasters with the implementation of the GLM, a first-of-its-kind sensor on the NOAA GOES-16 satellite. It detects lightning flashes from space, and informs forecasters about the internal dynamics of strong storm systems. The time-evolution of lightning activity indicate structural changes of the storm, and can be used to forecast potential intensification.
