Sergio Alejandro Ibarra-Espinosa

Sergio Alejandro Ibarra Espinosa is an atmospheric scientist specializing in the development and application of emissions inventories and transport modeling. His current work focuses on large-scale atmospheric dispersion using the HYSPLIT model to simulate the trajectory and impact of diverse aerosol sources. This includes analyzing the behavior of stratospheric aerosols and assessing dispersion patterns to support national and global environmental security. His expertise lies in translating complex data into actionable open-source tools. He developed the R package VEIN, a global standard for vehicle emissions inventories with over 50,000 downloads, eixport, pega, flan and more. Prior to joining CISESS, he conducted research at the NOAA Global Monitoring Laboratory, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Universidade de São Paulo, where he earned his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences. When he is not modeling atmospheric fluxes, he is usually dancing bachata, at a BBQ, or snowboarding.
