Yongsheng Zhang
Yongsheng Zhang is an Assistant Research Scientist with the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center at the University of Maryland-College Park (ESSIC/UMD). His original interests were in study of the Atmosphere-Land-Ocean interactions in the climate change. He received his B.S. and M.S. from the Peking University in China and Ph.D. from the Chinese Academy of Sciences supervised by Drs. Duzheng Ye and Guoxiong Wu, all in atmospheric sciences. After he received his PhD., he was a post-doctoral research associate in Meteorology Department of Naval Postgraduate School during 1997-1999 and then joined the InternationalPacific Research Center, University of Hawaii. His studies focused on the impact of the anomalous tropical sea surface temperature in the Indian and Pacifica Oceans and snow cover in Eurasian Continent on the annual, inter-annual and inter-decadal change of the Asian weather and climate. He also worked to build up an oceanic and atmospheric database extensively archiving the stationery observation, re-analyses and satellite products. Dr. Zhang joined Satellite Oceanography Team in Oceans and Coasts Science Division of NESDIS National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI, formerly National Oceanographic Data Center) in 2008, he is working to build up scientific stewardship and real time data verification and validation systems as well as produce experimental easier application level-3 products for the NOAA’s oceanographic satellite products. These tasks include development NCEI satellite oceanographic real-time data quality monitoring system for monitoring the Jason-2 and 3 sea surface level, Aquarius and SMOS sea surface sanity, NESDIS ocean SAR wind and Suomi NPP and future JPSS ocean color products. He is also working to develop real-time valued-added and easier use satellite oceanographic products and new data application. For instance, NCEI-binned level-3 SMOS 3-day and Aquarius 7-day and monthly average sea surface sanity and cycle mean Jason-2 sea surface level data. Another of Dr. Zhang’s task is to design and implement the scientific data stewardship in NCEI toward to use state of the art technologies on data archival, distribution and integration system to provide easier public discovery of and access to the NESDIS satellite oceanographic products.
