A Prototype Robotic Ground-based Cal/Val System

Under a CISESS Seed Grant, Xi Shao and his colleagues at the CISESS Remote Sensing Lab built a Robotic Ground-based Cal/Val System and used it in a field campaign for JPSS/VIRS and GOES-R/ABI validation.

SatERR is a community error inventory for satellite microwave observation error representation and uncertainty quantification, described by John Xun Yang and his co-authors in a new publication.

Special Issue on "Satellite Soil Moisture and Its Applications"

CICS-MD Scientist Jifu Yin is organizing a Special Issue on "Satellite Soil Moisture and Its Applications" with the journal Advances in Meteorology. He will serve at the guest lead editor. The Call for Papers has been released--click on the "read more" button below to go to it. The submission deadline is February 23rd and the publication date is July 2018. Two other guest editors on the issue are also from CICS-MD: Hui Xu and Heshun Wang.

CICS-MD at the JPSS Meeting this Week

The STAR JPSS Annual Science Meeting is being held this week, August 14–18, at NCWCP. Many of the speakers are from CICS-MD. On Friday, see Zhanqing Li and Ralph Ferraro. If you missed the poster session Tuesday evening, you can still see them here at ESSIC on the 3rd Floor through the end of the Conference. ​

Two New Sessions Announced for AGU Fall Meeting

CICS-MD Scientist Isaac Moradi is convening two new sessions for the upcoming AGU Fall Meeting. One is on calibration and validation of satellite microwave, infrared, and solar reflective observations. The other is on observing system simulation experiments (OSSEs) and data assimilation. Abstracts are due August 5.

GPM Applications Workshop

The Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) will hold its first Applications Workshop on November 12-13th, 2013 at the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction in College Park, Maryland. This two-day workshop will explore topics of weather forecasting, water resources, agricultural modeling, food security, hydrological modeling, disaster response, ecological forecasting and public health with respect to applications of TRMM & GPM satellite data​

NOAA Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop

Now that the government shutdown has ended, the CDPW will go ahead as scheduled. NOAA's 38th Climate Diagnostics and Prediction Workshop will be held on October 21-25 at the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction (NCWCP) Building in College Park, Maryland. We are extending the registration deadline on more day to TODAY October 17. On-site registration will also be available starting at 7:00 am on Monday, October 21.

WMO Symposium on Data Assimilation

The Sixth WMO Symposium on Data Assimilation will be held on 7-11 October 2013. It has been moved to the University of Maryland Riggs Alumni Center in College Park, MD due to the federal government shutdown. at the NOAA Center for Weather and Climate Prediction .
