New Chemistry for the Unified Forecasting System

CISESS Scientists Kai Yang (AOSC), Zachary Moon and colleagues have created a generalized global configuration to NOAA’s official Unified Forecasting System (UFS) to better simulate the full tropospheric and stratospheric chemistry needed for global air quality applications. The new Configurable ATmospheric Chemistry (CATChem) library and modeling component is described in their paper published in the Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems.

Combined Use of Satellite Observations and the RIM for Assessing Recovery from Natural Disasters

The Resilience Inference Measurement (RIM) model was developed to quantify resilience to natural disasters like fires and hurricanes. In this paper, CISESS Scientists Wenhui Wang, Yan Bai, Xi Shao, Sirish Uprety and Hong-Lie Qiu introduce an approach that integrates observations from several satellite platforms so that a recovery assessment can be made more quickly.

How to Monitor Coastal Water Quality from Satellites

At the beginning of April, CISESS Scientist Ron Vogel taught a week-long class for water quality management professionals entitled “Viewing and Analyzing Ocean/Coastal Events and Water Quality Using Satellites”. The class aimed to expand the use of oceanographic satellite data for monitoring conditions in coastal areas, such as toxic algal blooms and water clarity that affect human health, the aquaculture industry, tourism, and recreation.
