Radar Altimetry Advances for Ocean Observations

On 12 February 2026, CISESS Scientist Christopher Buchhaupt gave a talk titled “Advances in Radar Altimetry for Observing Sea State and Sea Level” as part of the STAR Science Seminar Series. He talked about the new generation of space-based instruments, which have significantly improved the ocean monitoring. He also introduced two new parameters that measure wave motion: standard deviation of vertical wave velocities and mean line-of-sight velocity.

Proactive Quality Control

CICS-MD Scientist Daisuke Hotta and Eugenia Kalnay have made a major breakthrough in quality control using the the Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter. The use of Ensemble Forecast Sensitivity to Observations (EFSO) on the GFS model is able to identify flawed observations in MODIS high latitude winds after only 6 hours.
